Aspec(t)

are SEC_ and Mario Gabola from Naples, Italy. SEC_ plays electronics through laptop. processed tapes, and analog synthesizer. Mario plays saxophone and feedbacks through a System of resonant dru m s and small speakers. Their music shares the timbrical research and the execution control typical of some radical irapro music (Pateras/Baxter/Brown, John Butcher, Jim Denley, Bruce Russell,..), but meets the visceral intensity and the obscure poetic of thé new aktionsm and of noise music (Rudolf Eb.er, Dave Phillips, Joke Lanz) as well as the research on analog devices and concrete sound materials of the sonic poetry (Lionel Marchetti, Jérôme Noetinger). The resuit is a fascinating and inextricable forest of sounds: frenetic structures, noise explosions, ancestral cries, an unceasing perversion of the soundscape and the time stream.

Aspec(t) are releasing their fourth work “Waspnest” on 12″ LP and on CD, a coproduction between italian labels Viande Records, Toxo Records and Fratto9UnderThe Sky.

They have had the pleasure to meet and play with musicians from all over the world (Mike Cooper, Katsura Yarnauchi, Dave Phillips, Valerio Tricoli, Jack Wright, Franck Vigroux, Ignaz Schick, Eugène Chadbourne, Basshaters, Claudio Rocchetti, Nicolas Wiese, Michael Renkel, Lorenzo Senni, (etre), Laurent Bruttin, Jonas Kocher, Olivier Di Placido, Jealousy Party, Mat Pogo, Agostino Di Scipio, Domenico Sciajno, Dominique Vaccaro, Taxonomy, GI Joe, Psychofagist, Renato Ciunfrini, Enrico Malatesta, Cris X, Andréa ics Ferraris, Anatrofobia, Splinter Vs Stalin, St.Ride, Fabrizio Spera, Roberto Bellatalla, Dario Fariello, Lendonnin…).

They often join guitarist Maurizio Argenziano of A Spirale, with whom they give life to Asp/SEC__ improvisation project. SEC_ also plays with Weltraum and Endorgan. Mario Gabola plays with A Spirale, Agostino Di Scipio and several other collaborators. Both play in thé supergroup Strongly Imploded.

The world of radical improvisation

is represented here with the music of Aspec(t), an Italian duo of SEC_ on laptop, processed tapes, analog synth and radio and Mario Gabola on feedback and acoustic sax, resonant/feed drums. They both have an extensive career with such bands as Asp/SEC_, Weltraum, Endorgan, A Spirale and Strongly Imploded. All of these, as far as I heard them, are to be found in a similar area of improvisation meeting noise. Themselves they refer to Pateras/Brown/Baxter, John Butcher, Jim Denley, Rudolf Eb.er, Dave Phillips, Sudden Infant, Lionel Marchetti and Jerome Noetinger. This is shown in their music. Partly analogue, sometimes massive noise based, but also with a strong love for small sounds and odd textures. The cover lists eleven tracks, but I found it hard to detect eleven different tracks. It could have been one per side, or thirty, as far as I could tell. Not that it really matters of course, what counts is what’s pressed in these grooves. And that’s something I like very much. I am known as someone who doesn’t love noise being over the top, but when noise is presented as something that comes in a bigger context, either free improvisation, totally controlled or something in between, then you have my blessing. Aspec(t) does exactly that: their loudness fits well with the softer moments, the free jazz of the saxophone, the banging of a drum, and the controlled textures of the electronics. Controlled mayhem as such, but excellent in its disorderly fashion. A very fine record, would be great to see them perform live. — (FdW) —VITAL WEEKLY 762
