The Last Woman

a selection from twenty years of poetry, is a voyage into being and living, into the country where a woman reveals herself without fear. This lyricism of survival emerges directly from an intimacy of words spoken by one in search of roots, loving and spiritual. French critic, Jean-Pierre Faye, says: “Claudine Bertrand stands between Gaston Miron and Tristan Tzara: a Quebec poet who invents her own new language.” This selection includes poems from La dernière femme (1991), L’amoureuse intérieure (1997), Tomber du jour (1999), Le corps en tête (2001), and Jardin des Vertiges (2002).

Claudine Bertrand

a Montreal-born poet, has published some 20 books of poems and artist’s books in Quebec and abroad, including L’Amoureuse intérieure (winner of the Société des écrivains canadiens poetry award in 1998), Tomber du jour, Jardin des vertiges (Hexagone) and Le Corps en tête (L’Atelier des Brisants, 2001), for which she won the Prix international de poésie Tristan-Tzara 2001 in Paris. Winner of a Woman of Distinction Award in 1997 and the Médaille d’or du Rayonnement culturel de la Renaissance française, she was awarded the Prix Saint-Denys Garneau for L’Énigme du futur (2002), which she co-produced with artist Chantal Legendre. Her more recent works include Pierres sauvages (Éditions L’Harmattan, 2005, France) and Ailleurs en soi (Domens, 2006, France). Ms. Bertrand is the founder of the review Arcade and has been its editor for the past 25 years. She has helped to promote Quebec poetry abroad through numerous readings, lectures, appearances and poetry workshops. She created the Web site mouvances.ca to give a voice to writers. Ms. Bertrand was the Paris correspondent for the first Poets of the World Congress in 2007 and will be Larochelle’s guest of honour at the 400th anniversary celebrations in 2008. Her most recent book is The Last Woman (Selected Poems 1991-2001, Éditions Guernica 2008).
