Newtone 2060

is an impro trio founded in 2005, composed by:

Cristiano Calcagnile (drums, objects, table-guitar)

Internationally active drummer/percussionist and composer, involved in projects entailing research and experimentation of languages. Member of Stefano Bollani’s “I Visionari” quintet, but also of Cristina Zavalloni’s “IDEA” and of Gianluca Petrella’s “Tubolibre”, he works within the world of jazz and improvisation, with inroads into ‘auteur’ pop (Cristina Donà, Pacifico, Finardi) and collaborations and projects with national caliber artists (Uncode Duello, Blastula with actress-singer Monica Demuru, Chant Trio of which he is founder and for whom he composes) and international caliber artists (Anthony Braxton, “Comicoperando” tribute to Robert Wyatt with Richard Sinclair, Chris Cutler, John Edwards, Anny Whitehead, Rova saxophone quartet).

Marco Albert (voice and effects)

Musician and audiovisual performer who has developed a multifaceted artistic path in electronic and electroacoustic music and audiovisual performances. Among the founding members of Otolab collective laboratory, where the synaesthetic relationship between sound and moving image is investigated, he has collaborated in developing immersive livemedia performance and installation projects. He has also released solo music works for international indie labels such as Stasisfield and Gruenrekorder and has performed both in Europe and North America. He has recently founded Clear Mark, micro-dance company based in Turin, Italy.

Salvatore Sammartino (old vinyls and old turntables)

Carpenter, activist, eclectic artist and animator of Milan’s cultural life who has developed his very own way of playing records and turntables. Since 1998 he has collaborated with other two bands: “Mercoledì” and “Mikrosolke”, besides having joined forces onstage with prominet members of the experimental electroacoustic scene.

The trio’s sound is dense but ready to be deconstructed, crossed by echoes of Italian songwriters, tango, ’80s, bebop and trash, constantly seeking a visionary musical script through a composite sound ‘palette’ and improvisation. Newtone2060 have released their first homonymous album with Italian label Setola di Maiale in May 2009. Their second album (Extracts) was released in 2011 by Manic Discs, their trio-run label that wishes to document their work and studio sessions and takes. The third album is out for Fratto9 Under the Sky Records in June 2011.

Extracts

of Charles Bukowski’s poetic works overlap on the interweavings and multiple stratified references in the trio’s music, thus becoming a recognizable and characterizing feature of this work. Bukowski’s poetry, rich in meaning and suggestions, adds up as a further reference, coherently with the trio’s musical aesthetics. The representation of man’s decadence and, at the same time, the quest for and acknowledgement of beauty in the details and crevices of this general condition, are the two opposing themes that act as the album’s file rouge. The materiality of Bukowski’s use of language adheres surprisingly to the sound of Newtone2060, who investigate and develop this dirty and only apparent randomness.

How is your heart?

during my worst times
on the park benches
in the jails
or living with
whores
I always had this certain
contentment-
I wouldn’t call it
happiness-
it was more of an inner
balance
that settled for
whatever was occuring
and it helped in the
factories
and when relationships
went wrong
with the
girls.

it helped
through the
wars and the
hangovers
the backalley fights
the
hospitals.

to awaken in a cheap room
in a strange city and
pull up the shade-
this was the craziest kind of
contentment

and to walk across the floor
to an old dresser with a
cracked mirror-
see myself, ugly,
grinning at it all.

what matters most is
how well you
walk through the
fire.
