Paul Giallorenzo

Born and raised in NY, Chicago-based improviser, composer, and sound designer using piano, synthesizer, and electronics in a wide variety of groups and contexts, ranging from jazz and improvised music to electro-acoustic / noise. Current projects include GitGO (482 Music, free jazz compositions); Breakway (Peira, electro/acoustic improvising trio with electronicist Brian Labycz and drummer Marc Riordan); Masul (Creative Sources Recordings, duo with Swiss composer/bass saxophonist Thomas Mejer); The Telegraph Series (Augmented Records, synth-pop duo with drummer/vocalist Allison Stanley); and a piano trio featuring Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and drummer Tim Daisy.

Regular collaborations with many Chicago-based musicians including Guillermo Gregorio, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Jeb Bishop, Mars Williams, Anton Hatwich, Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Josh Berman, Keefe Jackson, Jason Stein, Frank Rosaly, Jason Roebke, Charles Rumback, Toby Summerfield, Brian Labycz, Marc Riordan as well many Swiss musicians including Urs Leimgruber, Charlotte Hug, Thomas Mejer, Beat Unternährer, Christoph Erb, Julian Sartorius, Achim Escher, Fredy Studer, Lionel Friedli, and Marc Unternährer.

Funded multiple times by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs for recording new work, and performed at the WNUR Chicago Sounds Jazzfest and Chicago Jazz Festival. Outside of Chicago, performed throughout the mid-west, north, and south-eastern U.S.; in São Paulo, Brazil; and throughout Switzerland – including a 2008 artist-in-residency organized through the Chicago-Lucerne Sister City Committee. Producer, organizer, co-founder, director of the art gallery/music venue Elastic, producing hundreds of creative music concerts in Chicago since 2001. .

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten

(b. 1971, Oppdal) – studied Jazz at the Music Consevatory in Trondheim, Norway (1992-1995) under the tutelage of bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth.

When one listens to the great bassists in modern jazz history, a striking thing (though it may not be immediately arrived at) is that greatness is reached through open-mindedness and diversity. William Parker, Malachi Favors Maghostut, Peter Kowald, Wilbur Ware, Bertram Turetsky, Buell Neidlinger – all of these bass players have embraced a lifestyle of playing all sorts of music and the breadth of each musicians’ technique is a testament to those experiences. Norwegian bassist and composer Ingebrigt Håker Flaten is also a musician whose experience is both geographical and aesthetic. While the fertile Scandinavian new jazz scene offered a vast amount of opportunities to work in different bands with musicians whose concepts are as individual as the grains in a reed, Flaten has found home and on-the-bandstand education in places as far flung as Chicago and his current residence Austin, Texas.

A muscular player whose tone and attack run the gamut from Paul Chambers to Buschi Niebergall, his sense of both openness and control serves ensembles as diverse as The Thing, Free Fall, Atomic, Scorch Trio and the Kornstad/Håker Flaten Duo. In addition to his own Chicago Sextet and Austin-centric Young Mothers, Flaten has also recorded and performed with Frode Gjerstad, Dave Rempis, Bobby Bradford, the AALY Trio, Ken Vandermark, Stephen Gauci, Tony Malaby, Daniel Levin, Dennis Gonzalez and numerous others. Flaten studied at the Conservatory in Trondheim (1992-1995), turning professional shortly afterward, yet his hunger to play in new situations with new musicians – schooled or amateur, frequently recorded or just starting out – puts him in a rare class, that of a truly broad-minded artist. That mettle has served him well, living and developing the music under his own steam and drawing from influences as diverse as Derek Bailey, George Russell, Chris McGregor, filmmakers Ingmar Bergman, contemporary pop melody and gritty punk music as well as everyday sights and sounds.

Tim Daisy

is a Chicago based percussionist, composer and educator working in the fields of improvised and composed music. Active since 1997, Tim has performed, recorded, and toured with many acclaimed musicians and ensembles from both the United States and Europe and has toured extensively throughout North America , Europe, and Mexico. Working in a number of different environments, he has composed for solo percussion, chamber groups, jazz ensembles, dance, theater, and film.

Tim had had the fortunate experience to work with many of the most cutting edge musicians currently working in the filed of improvised music including: Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, John Tchicai, Fred Lonberg-Holm, James Falzone, Dave Rempis, Steve Swell, Jeb Bishop, and Fred Anderson.

He has performed drums as well as showcased his original compositions at many festivals throughout North America and Europe including: The Newport Jazz Festival, The Umbrella Music Festival in Chicgo, The Wels Music Unlimited Festival in Wels Austria, The North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands and the Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival in Montreal. Along with his busy performance and composing schedule, Tim finds the time to teach private drum instruction both at his studio in Chicago as well as throughout the Chicago metro area.

In 2011 Tim received both the New Music America “Composers Assistance Award” as well as the American Society of Composers Authors, and Publishers “ASCAP Plus Award” recognizing his original contributions to American music.
