Reminiszenzen... Erinnerung... Anklang...

Reminiscence

Memory, appeal, seems the correct name for a piece of work that mainly feels influenced by the what has passed the "past", that threatens to be lost for ever, but nevertheless is still present if the eyes and ears are consciously aware of it. In the present music a great deal will vaguely remind us of it, other parts in a more subtle and indirect way, and not the music itself in any way, but rather astate of imaginary memory in which the originator feels himself, a memory that passes through the mind.

Generally speaking, it was not the meticulous arrangement by its dedicators that allowed this music to be created. It was much more a question of catching at an instinctive message, the feeling for its language. Since neither the interpretation nor the dai m to playi ng "correctly" were of uppermost concern, there is enough scope left to ask questions. This scope which is accessible and by no means locked away, however, can be followed by approach - always in danger of becoming enveloped in what could yet "still be possible", and also the attribute of still endeavouring, which then seems somewhat far-fetched. But is not this end, too, "the vaguely reminiscent appeal of a memory", at least aa.?

Having arrived this far, the "imponderables" of improvised eloquence offer more for following the paths whose vision, although keeping the process of play alive, has no influence on the irregularities of the background itself. In this way, for example, such staggering compositions as "erics drunken dog" came about, a homage to "something" that could be associated with Saties' person. Or does it totally "lie"? - "lie" totally off-track?!

It can hardly turn out 1:1, if the impulse of the music grasps anew at what has dwindled in our memory and endeavours to cast light on the shadows of the past as they play with the present circumstances. !Look forward into the past! Hubert Bergmann (translation by Susan Vogt)
