Don’t miss Nicola’s assertive solo work ! A remarkable balance between impetus and delicacy, a consistent mélange of authority and audacity, lyrical flights and meaty smashes that give both the experienced listener and the newcomer a great recording!
First solo album by Nicola Guazzaloca delivers us a fully blossomed pianist. A genuine work of constant inventiveness where simple light figures and deeply textured sketches are driven by the impetus of the instant self-composing material and by a complete investigation of the piano, never losing the narrative control and the force of a fresh suggestion.
Far from being a flashy showcase, “Tecniche Arcaiche”
is a journey from within. Starting from the very core of the sound right from the flesh of the piano and proceeding to investigate all possible paths to pure ‘sound-music’, the work leads us from complex harmonic depths to luminous touches of melody, easily flying over the whole keyboard as on a perfectly smooth dance floor. The breath of the whole album grows gradually in terms of synthesis, operational methodology and fresh invention. It offers varied interpretative perspectives, from the intimate hiding place to the explicit sung line.
Elliptical lines are consistently and subtly subverted by parallel and noisy natural reverbs. A pretty rare taste, captivating and mysterious with a generous and fluent style communicating a love for clarity and a storming attitude.
Nicola Guazzaloca’s “inside-piano” unorthodox exploration is but one of the marvelous features of his poetry and distinctive features of his style. His playing never loses the narrative control and the force of his suggestion drives on throughout the whole album. Taking care with a multi-layered intuition, simple light figures and deeply textured sketches driven by the impetus of the instant self-composing material rise out of a massive sound with perfect clarity. The journey’s delights end with a live recorded performance that delivers a sort of ballad, I’d say, simple in design yet with complex sequences and infused with thrilling suspense. This is a great work, probably a top one in Nicola’s already dense discography, surely the closest to his authentic, genuine style.
“Tecniche Arcaiche” sublimates the last years of further refinement, variation, elaboration, contrast; all that richness that an intelligent and curious musician can draw from the interactive freedom offered by small groups and great collaborations. This solo piano declination delivers a opportunity to perceive Guazzaloca’s fully blossoming in eloquent sound and constant inventiveness, not so easy to find today.
The remarkable balance between impetus and delicacy remains the open secret of this guy’s music. A consistent melange of authority and audacity, lyrical flights and meaty smashes that give both the experienced listener and the newcomer a sincere experience. — Gianni Mimmo
