Beppe Scardino’s two sides are well-represented
in this work; on one side you’ll find the sardonic Livorno native, salacious and shrewd. On the other side lies the tender, reflective, impassioned mediator. In “Orange room” all the candour and humanity of the Tuscan baritone player and composer is evident, and he is joined by a fresh set of musical- and life- companions. From “brother-by-election” Piero Bittolo Bon to Francesco Bigoni, Pasquale Mirra, Antonio Borghini and Federico Scettri, a very young and surprising drummer with a rare musicality.
Atmospheres somewhere between Mingus “al cacciucco soup” and some bitter Blue Note sixties albums, like some Jackie McLean’s most extreme recordings , thanks also to the Hutcherson-like touch of the oblique Mirra, capable of not covering but of unveiling the nudity of this pianoless sextet. — Giovanni Natoli
Considering that I was not previously familiar
with any of the musicians in this fine sextet, both Mikey & I were completely flaggerghasted! […] There is restless, exciting quality to all of the pieces. […] This is yet another winner from an unknown Italian sextet. — Bruce Lee Gallanther, Downtown Music Gallery, 2008
