Le trio 2° etage, compose de Jean- Luc Cappozzo, Gerry Hemingway et Christine Wodrascka improvise sa musique comme des conteurs, des peintres, des poetes. The titles of the pieces are evocative: on the bottom of grey matter, a possessed sheriff arrives from a ghost train, goes near a rivulet, begins a movement, up down, its time to dance, beautiful escape! The trio 2° etage, comprised of Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Gerry Hemingway and Christine Wodrascka, improvise their music as storytellers, painters, poets. These three musi-cans are magicians of the spontaneous, instantly creating a setting, a story and an imaginary world with their sounds born from pipes, shells, skins, rubber, wood, bells, balls, adhesive tape, clothespins…. It was recorded in 2011 in Bologna at the Ivan Illich Popular School of Music and it contains 11 tracks for about 50 minutes of music. The music of Kongrosian is free jazz or is it improvisational jazz? I think both terms will bring to mind complete freedom, which for a few may mean “lack of organization or direction”, which in their case is untrue. Bootstrap Paradox (Aut) is a collaborative effort between the trio and Oreste Sabadin, and together they make music with a small bit of foundation, but then they each have the freedom to go anywhere and everywhere with what they do. In fact, the group say they are “a trio + 1″, and the role of that +1 is open to anyone who wants to join them. I love the concept of music that is “in the making”, or at least music that sounds like it’s being assembled as you hear it. You may hear trumpets, saxophones, and a bass clarinet play an off-key melody, while another clarinet plays around and within that melody, only for another instrument to follow, which in turns follows something else. It’s like an onion unveiling new layers, and you’re not sure whether to enjoy the onion or keep peeling. That’s the joy of such pieces as “I’m A Strange Loop”, “Fractal Structure Of Revolutions”, and “No, sir, away! A papaya war is on!”, the words have no reason for being there and perhaps the sounds are the same. They don’t belong, but do because that’s how it’s combined, to create these reckless sounds that may make you want to join in and play. Bootstrap Paradox is an album that is far from lacking any direction, the fun is trying to compile the sounds and figure out what they’ll do next. PAST & PRESENT FUTURESThe future of improvised music, and or, for lack of a better term “modern jazz”, continues to thrive and evolve. To spite the drawbacks, lack of venues, media support etc, the music just keeps moving forward with a new generation of players carrying on the tradition of freely improvised music. The past meets the present and the future can only hold an even higher quality of musical interpretation and concepts. Past & Present Futures was recorded on a fall afternoon just outside of New York City. This was my first time meeting and playing with bassist Francois Grillot and drummer Federico Ughi. Multi reeds player, trumpeter Daniel Carter and I have recorded and played together several time over the years. The music and ideas flowed naturally. After a long and productive evening of playing the group walked away with several hours of recorded music. We were ail happy with the outcome and felt that some cohesive playing and improvising had been accomplished. After much consideration we selected here what I feel are the highlights of the session. Mirio Cosottini graduated from Florences Academy of Music in 1992 and subsequently studied under P. Thibaud, Luca Marzana and Emanuele Antoniucci. In 1999, he received his degree in Philosophy at the University of Florence. He is one of the founding members of Timet, a 10-year collaboration that led to his contribution as a performer and composer on several of the group’s highly original works. Since that time, he has dwelved further into composition, musical analysis and improvisation, as can be seen from his musical contributions to the field of dance, theatre, poetry and cinema. In 2005 he founded with Alessio Pisani the GRIM (Musical Improvisation Research Group). Since 2005 teaches improvisation at the Conservatory of Padova, Italy. Continue reading
