We’ve reviewed albums before with saxophonist and clarinetist Sabir Mateen bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Whit Dickey. Use the “search” engine on the right and lists of albums will appear, with the three artists as leaders in their respective bands, and in bands like Frode Gjerstad’s Circulasione Totale, William Parker’s orchestras, the David S Ware bands, or in albums with Joe Morris, Matthew Shipp, Joe McPhee, Daniel Carter … and many more. And now we get all three in a trio, and a real trio, with all three musicians shaping the sound. Is it all improvised? PAST & PRESENT FUTURESThe future of improvised music, and or, for lack of a better term “modern jazz”, continues to thrive and evolve. To spite the drawbacks, lack of venues, media support etc, the music just keeps moving forward with a new generation of players carrying on the tradition of freely improvised music. The past meets the present and the future can only hold an even higher quality of musical interpretation and concepts. Past & Present Futures was recorded on a fall afternoon just outside of New York City. This was my first time meeting and playing with bassist Francois Grillot and drummer Federico Ughi. Multi reeds player, trumpeter Daniel Carter and I have recorded and played together several time over the years. The music and ideas flowed naturally. After a long and productive evening of playing the group walked away with several hours of recorded music. We were ail happy with the outcome and felt that some cohesive playing and improvising had been accomplished. After much consideration we selected here what I feel are the highlights of the session. Recorded at the end of a weeklong tour in Bielefeld Germany at the club Bunker. The CD includes Jan Klare on alto saxophone and flute, Bill Elgart drums and percussion, Meinrad Kneer on bass and Jeff Platz guitar. The idea was to record a few takes during the day and then record the evening performance. The club Bunker is an actual bunker from the world war two era, which has been transformed into one of the countries most historic jazz clubs. This project has been created by the Associazione Libarna Arteventi in collaboration with Amirani Records and Teriyaki Records. Thanks to Serravalle Scrivia municipality, it has also been included in the 2013 edition of Le Storie del Novecento national literary awards. The project is based on the idea that art and culture are not only a source of beauty and aesthetic pleasure, but they are also a way of life. As Deafness Increases plays music in the gray area between composition and improvisation. Clear structural frameworks functions as a starting point for creating music where slow haunting soundscapes are alternated with rapid movements and semi-melodic passages. Through the use of flexible instrumental roles and extended techniques, the trio strives to create a sound that grows beyond it’s components. The self titled debut album was recorded during two days in Oslo spring 2013, and consists of one long composition and three shorter pieces. “Svalbard” was originally created by the trio to accompany a compilation of film clips made by an anonymous amateur at the arctic islands in the 1930s.

Lana trio is an experimental ensemble for the exploration of historic, non-ideomatic improvisation. Andreas, Henrik and Kjetil started playing together quickly after meeting at Sund Folk College in 2007, and extensively explored how musical parametres like density, speed, duration and volume could be stretched in order to create different possibilities for musical interplay. The trio have worked both with graphical notation and so called free improvisation, and plays music that draws inspiration from a wide variety of genres. The members of Lana trio are already experienced musicians, active in bands like Mopti, Einer, Skadedyr, Orter eparg and As deafness increases. Together or seperately they have played concerts around Europe in countries like England, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Poland, Czech republic, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, and taken part in longer study trips to New york and The Gambia. The trio did a small Scandinavian tour in 2009, followed by a longer period with little activity due to geographical challenges. 2013 will bring new life to the band, with the release of the long-awaited debut recording and concerts in Norway and around Europe.
