The SUREAU trio trio is playing free spontaneous improvisations based on mutual listening, musical invention and sound exploration. Double bass , voice and percussion. Jason Kao Hwang | Will Connell Jr. | William Parker | Takeshi Zen Matsuura | Commitment – The Complete Recordings – 1981-1983 | No Business Records

In some ways, Commitment was typical of many bands of their time. Between 1978 and 1984, they enjoyed a modest success by the subterranean standards of the Lower East Side. They struggled for gigs during the waning years of the New York loft scene, enjoyed higher profile gigs at several Kool Jazz Festivals, made one short European tour, and recorded one LP. But their music is more significant than this story might indicate. Hwang was among the first improvisers to emerge out of the Asian American movement. His presence in the band as composer and improviser makes Commitment one of the first Afro-Asian free jazz ensembles. The presence of Asian American, African American, and Asian musicians in one band was almost unprecedented in the New York lofts, and their fusion of elements from Asian and African American cultures was unique – Ed Hazell Continue reading

Hannah Marshall | Nicola Guazzaloca | Gianni Mimmo | Leila Adu | The Shoreditch Concert | Amirani Records

The Shoreditch Church concert and recording represents one of the best performances I have assisted in the past 2009. Four different and strong personalities, extremely talented, have played in an unusual place [an old church in the busy Shoreditch central London area] that for the characteristic of its own acoustic has engaged the quartet in a highly demanding level of concentration, and resulting in an extraordinary performance”. Excerpt from the liner note by composer Dario Palermo Continue reading

Agnieszka Skrzypek aka Aga Zaryan | My Lullaby | Not Two Records

Aga Zaryan (born Agnieszka Skrzypek on January 17, 1976) is an internationally recognized jazz vocalist of the new generation.

Though (in jazz terms) young, her tone and delivery carry the hallmarks of classical jazz for a modern audience and as such is part of a new wave of Polish jazz artists recognised on the international scene. She is known for her distinctive style and intimate approach to singing, with a characteristic lightness of phrasing and warm, slightly matte-toned voice. Her performances are reminiscent of such female jazz vocalists as Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae and Joni Mitchell. This year Aga Zaryan was signed to Blue Note records to join such names as such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Dianne Reeves, she is also the first Polish artist ever to release albums on Blue Note Records. Zaryan has been successful in integrating ambitious artistic goals with popular appeal, recording eight albums to date, all of which have earned gold, platinum or multi-platinum status. In 2008 she was honored with the Polish recording industry’s most prestigious prize – the Fryderyk Award. She was nominated for the title of Woman of The Year 2008 by Gazeta Wyborcza, one of Poland’s most widely circulated newspapers. Aga was also named Jazz Vocalist of The Year in the European Jazz Forum’s yearly Jazz Top readers’ poll consecutively from 2007 through 2013. She has an active performance and recording schedule.
